According to the South China Morning Post, the three-year-old boy’s mother took to the Chinese social media platform, RedNote, last week to share how her son was mistakenly served a glass of white wine instead of water. The family was travelling in business class from Hong Kong to London with Cathay Pacific on April 24.

According to the social media post, the boy told his father that the beverage served to him tasted sour. When the father inspected and tasted the drink, he was shocked to discover that it was white wine, and not water, that had been served to his child. The post also mentioned that the flight attendant simply exchanged the white wine for water, without promptly providing medical assistance. On the parents’ insistence, a fellow passenger who was also a doctor from France checked the boy and said that he was fine.

The mother, however, expressed concern about whether the wine sipped by her son would result in long-term health issues. She demanded a proper explanation from Cathay Pacific on how it would stop similar incidents from happening again. Reports, however, also revealed that the parents have not sought a medical check-up for the child yet.

Cathay Pacific has apologised for the oversight and for serving the three-year-old wine during the flight in response via email. They have also offered a refund of the child’s ticket with three one-class upgrade vouchers, and cover the costs of any incident-related medical check-ups. The estimated refund and compensation value is about ₹75,000-₹85,000.

The airline also assured the parents that it had taken steps to address the situation. It has launched an internal review to ensure appropriate follow-up actions as well. Cathay Pacific also mentioned in the email that the cabin crew acted out of caution and paged medical personnel onboard. They also contacted an independent medical agency as a safety precaution.
