On Thursday, December 12, India proudly celebrated D Gukesh’s historic win at Singapore’s World Chess Championship 2024. The Andhra-origin chess prodigy from Tamil Nadu, India, at 18, became the world’s youngest chess champion. He checkmated China’s Ding Liren in the decisive Game 14 where the match led to a draw only for Ding Liren to make a move equivalent to hitting the self-destruct button. Gukesh pounced on Ding Liren’s mistake and clinched victory. We have a throwback story about D. Gukesh’s favourite Indian dish, which he feasted on when he was in Norway.
D.Gukesh Visited Norway’s Spisoh For Aatu Erachi Masala
As per a story by The Indian Express, Nitish Kamath, one of the five owners of Spisoh, a restaurant known for serving authentic South Indian fare in Norway revealed feeding India’s pride, D.Gukesh in 2023. Nitish stated that Gukesh was playing at the prestigious 2023 Norway Chess Tournament he kept ordering a traditional dish from Tamil Nadu that reminded him of home.
Craving home-cooked food, Gukesh and his family ordered Aatu Erachi Masala from Spisoh. This is a spicy lamb curry from Tamil Nadu made of roasted spices. The restaurateur revealed to The Indian Express that it was clearly Gukesh and his family’s favourite dish as they kept ordering it day in and day out during their stay in Norway. Nitish stated that when they would punch in the order, the chef knew he would be cooking for the young chess prodigy.

The Restaurant Congratulated The World Chess Champion For His Incredible Feat
The Spisoh owner added that on most days Gukesh’s father would stop by to pick up the food from the restaurant. But on the rest of the days, Gukesh would visit the restaurant with his trainer Grzegorz Gajewski. The restaurant’s official Instagram handle made a special post for Gukesh, congratulating him for being the world’s youngest-ever world chess champion. Spisoh which has fed Gukesh and other chess stars from India, congratulated him for his “incredible achievement” and for “inspiring millions with his brilliance and determination”.
