Tomato is an essential ingredient in Indian cuisine and is often used in making thick gravies. Though it was once sold at ₹10 per kilo, tomato prices have reached a new level in the last few days. In fact, it has reached ₹200 per kilo! However, tomatoes will be sold at subsidised rates in North India.

On Sunday, the prices for tomatoes were reduced by the central government at which NCCF and NAFED, state-owned cooperatives, sold them. Further, it has been reduced to ₹80 per kg from ₹90 per kilo. The growing costs are the biggest concern for the average person as it is used frequently. Prices have now decreased thanks to the government intervening in the market. Tomato prices in wholesale and retail marketplaces in Delhi and the NCR have decreased to ₹30-35 per kg as a result of the subsidy.

Officials from the consumer affairs ministry announced that extra tomato-selling trucks would be placed in the capital city, its suburbs, and other significant cities across the nation. In many areas of the nation where tomato prices were excessively high.

Over 50 Tonnes Sold In Delhi-NCR!

The Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh confirmed that the government’s intervention has decreased the cost of tomatoes in the wholesale market. He further stated that the government is dedicated to helping the populace. According to NCCF sources, over 50 tonnes of tomatoes have been sold in Delhi and the National Capital Region during the past three days. In fact, the activity will continue until the prices return to normal.

According to the consumer affairs ministry, in addition to the NCR, tomatoes are also being sold at reduced costs in the cities like Lucknow, Muzaffarpur, Varanasi, Patna, Kanpur, and Arrah. Due to a monsoon-related disruption in supply, tomato prices have skyrocketed.

Tomatoes are purchased by NCCF and NAFED from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. In Delhi, tomatoes typically cost between ₹121 and ₹122 per kilo. The commodity is being offered at a reduced cost by the government via the Price Stabilisation Fund.
