Val Kilmer, the actor known for his performances in ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Batman Forever’, has died at the age of 65. He died from pneumonia on Tuesday evening in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family and friends. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed the news. Kilmer had previously battled throat cancer, diagnosed in 2014.
Iconic Roles And Career Highlights
Born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, Kilmer displayed an early passion for acting. At the age of 17, he became the youngest student to be admitted to the Juilliard School’s drama division. He got his first break in acting with the 1984 slapstick comedy ‘Top Secret!’ followed in 1985 with ‘Real Genius.’
With these roles, he showcased his comedic speciality, thus crossing into a multi-faceted career. Kilmer’s role as naval aviator Lt. Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazanski in the 1986 movie, ‘Top Gun’ drove him to stardom. He also proved his versatility by playing Jim Morrison in ‘The Doors’ (1991) and by taking on the title role in ‘Batman Forever’ (1995).
He was very committed to the part; for example, he wore leather pants all the time and requested to be addressed as Morrison by cast and crew.
Personal Life And Legacy
As reported by the New Indian Express, from 1988 until 1996, he was married to actress Joanne Whalley. The couple had two children, Mercedes and Jack. In fact, throughout his career, Kilmer drew an intense approach to these roles, which sometimes led to a reputation for being challenging to work with.
Nevertheless, it was because of his commitment to authenticity and hard work that he made an indelible mark in Hollywood. Reflecting on his journey in the 2021 documentary ‘Val’, Kilmer said, “I have behaved poorly. I have behaved bravely. I have behaved bizarrely to some. I haven’t denied all this, and I don’t regret anything because I lost and rediscovered pieces of myself that I didn’t even know existed.”
His passing marks the end of a significant chapter in cinematic history, but his performances will continue to inspire and resonate with audiences worldwide.
