More About Creative Cities Project

These varieties of bread represent Saudi cities that are a part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. For those who weren’t aware, the Breads of the Creative Cities Project was started back in the year 2018. The idea was quite simple: it was to celebrate the cultural heritage of bread. Every year, farmers, millers, and bakers from around the world share the stories and recipes of how they recreated the city’s traditional bread. As such, the project aligns closely with the objectives of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network that was established back in 2004. Comprising 350 cities across 105 countries, all of these are recognised for their initiatives that use cultural heritage and creativity to foster sustainable development. These must be in one of the seven clusters that include gastronomy, design, craft & folk art, media arts, music, literature, and film.

Coming back to the traditional bread, Kleija is basically a traditional biscuit that’s made with molasses from the Qassim region. Its origins trace back to over a century and the sweet treat is embedded in the traditions and customs of this region. Al-Khubz Al-Ahmar, which is also known as the red bread or date bread is a significant cultural and economic symbol for this reason. Al-Mallah bread from Taif is linked to the nomadic tribes of the Arabian peninsula and serves as a symbol of hospitality for its distinct and laborious preparation.

Truly a proud moment, these inclusions just prove the vibrancy of the Saudi Arabian culture.
