Ladakh Has A Village Near Kargil That Lets You Land On The Moon Without Leaving India

High up in the mountains of Ladakh, far from the noise of cities, lies a magical village called Lamayouro. People often call it the “Moon Land of Leh”, and once you see it, you’ll understand why. There is no landscape like this one on Earth. If you have ever imagined walking on the surface of the moon, with strange hills, craters, and valleys stretching endlessly, Lamayouro gives you that very experience, right here on Earth.

Why Is Lamayouro Called The Moon Land?

Lamayouro’s nickname “moon land” comes from its unique landscape. While this area was covered by a large lake once, when the water dried up, these crater-like shaped formed by wind and rain emerged. Here, the hills are yellowish and brownish, featuring deep valleys and ridges that stretch on forever. Lamayouro attracts tourists, photographers, and nature lovers from all over the world because it feels like you’re walking on a different planet.

The village is also home to one of the biggest and oldest monasteries in Ladakh. Lamayouro Monastery was built in the 11th century and is situated 3,510 metres above the village. Visiting this monastery is like travelling back in time. Here, you can discover beautiful prayer halls, admire intricate murals, and watch monks going about their daily lives.

  • This moon land is one of the best places to go for a hike. Imagine yourself walking along the hills and craters while taking in the stunning views from all directions.
