This charming village isn’t just an art hub; it’s a cultural haven. Its fame lies in its master Pattachitra painters, who carry forward an art form that traces its roots back to 5 BC in this very region. Every household here seems to breathe artistry. The artisans, known as Chitrakars, pass down their skills from generation to generation.

They meticulously craft these intricate paintings using natural pigments derived from minerals, vegetables, and other organic sources. The process is steeped in tradition and symbolism, with each colour carrying its own significance, creating a visual tapestry that speaks volumes about the rich Odishan heritage.

Moreover, this cultural enclave isn’t just a haven for Pattachitra; it’s a melting pot of diverse crafts. From Tussar painting to palm leaf engraving, stone and wood carving, cow-dung and papier-mache toys, and the intricate art of mask-making, every corner of Raghurajpur exudes craftsmanship.

The village boasts a lineage of renowned artists, including Padma Vibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and Padma Shri Guru Maguni Charan Das. They are both pivotal in the evolution of Odissi dance. Gotipua, a traditional dance form practised here, is its precursor. It is a traditional dance form where young boys dressed as girls perform acrobatic movements to rhythmic beats. This dance adds another layer to the village’s cultural tapestry.

In the year 2000, Raghurajpur gained recognition as Odisha’s first heritage village after an extensive research and documentation project by INTACH. This acknowledgement paved the way for its development into a heritage crafts village, culminating in an interpretation centre, commissioned artworks adorning the homes of artists, and a rest house, nurturing the village’s artistic soul.
