When you drive through Sugar Land, Texas, you will see a huge statue rising above the skyline. Standing tall and serene is the Statue of Union, a 90-foot bronze statue of Lord Hanuman, one of the most loved gods in Hindu mythology. A symbol of devotion, strength, and unity, it has quickly become one of the most unique landmarks in the United States.
What Is The Statue Of Union?
The statue is dedicated to the Indian epic Ramayana’s Lord Hanuman. Hanuman is seen as the perfect devotee and a symbol of courage and sacrifice. In the story, he plays a key role in reuniting Lord Rama and his wife, Sita. This monument is referred to as the Statue of Union for this reason.
At 90 feet (27 metres) tall and weighing 90 tonnes, it is the tallest statue of Hanuman in North America. In fact, in the list of tallest statues in the United States, it proudly takes the fourth spot, right after the Statue of Liberty, the Birth of the New World, and the Pegasus and Dragon. That alone makes it a must-see.
The idea of building this statue in Texas came from Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swami, a spiritual leader from India who also created the famous Statue of Equality in Hyderabad. The bronze statue has been meticulously crafted in every way. Hanuman is shown standing upright and blessing everyone with his palms facing forward. The statue’s base is decorated with elephants and flowers, and the gada, or mace, which is his trademark weapon, is beautifully carved.
A Monument Of Faith, Strength, And Togetherness
In August 2024, the Statue of Union was unveiled, and the celebrations took place over three days. The celebrations included a shower of flower petals from a helicopter, a sprinkling of holy water, and even a 72-foot-long garland draped around Hanuman’s neck.
The fusion of Indian and American traditions added to the event’s charm. National anthems from India and the United States were played, along with more patriotic songs. The Statue of Union is not just about height or size. It’s about what it stands for. For followers, it serves as a place of worship, and it provides a link to the heritage of the Indian-American community.
