Mumbai Metro Line 5: Travel From Thane To Ulhasnagar In Minutes In 34-Km Longest Corridor; Deets Inside!

Good news for people living in Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan or Ulhasnagar, as the new Metro Line 5 is going to make travel simpler and easier for you. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) announced on Thursday that Metro Line 5 will now stretch 34.21 km. Scroll down to know more about it.

Thane-Ulhasnagar Metro Line 5 To Open Soon

As per a report by News18, the Thane-Ulhasnagar metro line 5 is going to be one of the largest metro corridors in the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This is followed by the approval of a new extension called Metro Line 5A, which adds another 11.83 km to the original 22.38 km project. The total estimated cost of the project is said to be around ₹18,130 crore.

The full route will connect Thane to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar and will pass through Bhiwandi, one of the important commercial hubs. Phase 1 of Metro Line 5, linking Thane to Dhamankar Naka, is right now the closest to completion. As per the MMRDA, the standard corridor is now being prepared for CMRS inspection, which is said to be an important government safety clearance necessary before passenger operations and travel can begin. As per reports by Mid-Day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has stated that this first phase is expected to open to the public by the end of 2026. However, further information and timelines for the remaining phases are yet to be officially announced.

Key Benefits For Daily Commuters

If reports are to be believed, the development is being seen as a major boost for travellers across Mumbai. Talking about the expansion, Devendra Fadnavis called the Metro Line 5 an important infrastructure development project for Bhiwandi and the Kalyan-Dombivli region. The region is also home to over 35 lakh residents who are in need of faster connectivity.

Meanwhile, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee said the metro line is expected to play a key role in the authority’s larger ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ vision intended to reduce travel time across the region. For years, areas such as Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Dombivli have undergone rapid growth without matching transport infrastructure. Most residents still rely on crowded local trains and traffic-heavy roads for daily travel. Once fully operational, the 34.21-km Metro Line 5 is expected to significantly improve connectivity and ease commuting across one of MMR’s busiest residential and industrial corridors.
