This Unique Museum In France Lets You Ride A 14M Tall Minotaur, Watch Giant Spiders Move, & More

Explore a 4,000-square-metre hall filled with over 200 interactive inventions created by the artistic company La Machine.

La Halle de La Machine in Toulouse, France, is your dream come true if you’ve ever wanted to enter a world where machines act like living things, where enormous creatures roam the streets, and where engineering and art combine to create pure magic. It’s a fantasy world that you can touch, watch, and even ride.

What Exactly Is La Halle de La Machine?

La Halle de La Machine is a huge 4,000-square-metre hall located on the old runway of the Toulouse-Montaudran Airport. Today, this space is home to massive mechanical creatures, imaginative machines, and performers who bring them to life. Created by the artistic collective La Machine, the museum focuses on interactive, theatrical machines.

When we say machines, we mean everything from giant spiders to walking minotaurs to quirky little inventions that serve wine or play music. What makes this place unforgettable is that nothing here stands still. Everything moves and performs with the help of skilled artists called the Véritable Machinists.

As you walk through the hall, you come across more than 200 unusual machines, each one stranger and more delightful than the last. The Great Spider, a massive steel and wood mechanical spider, The Flute Casserole, a pot that actually plays music, The Wine-Drinking Machine, a tiny mechanical marvel that pours wine with dramatic gestures, and Mechanical Sculptures From Famous Shows (such as La Symphonie Mécanique, La Kermesse, and Les Mécaniques Savantes) are a few of the highlights.

A Museum Where Machines Come Alive

One of the biggest attractions, literally, is Astérion, the enormous Minotaur who stands 14 metres tall and weighs 47 tonnes. He made his first appearance in 2018 during a street performance that drew over 800,000 people. Today, he lives at La Halle de La Machine, and visitors can actually ride on his back as he walks through the Montaudran district.

Along with Astérion, you’ll also meet Ariane, a massive mechanical spider who starred in several street shows, including one followed by almost a million people. Watching her move is an eerie yet elegant experience. Just outside, you’ll find one of the most unusual carousels in Europe. Instead of horses, this carousel features giant buffalo, enormous insects, praying mantises, and other whimsical creatures.

Whether you’re riding a Minotaur, watching machinists perform spontaneous skits, or sipping beer while a mechanical spider creeps by, the museum makes you feel like you’ve entered a world where machines have feelings and stories of their own.
