You Might Soon Be Able To Glide Across The Water In Abu Dhabi On Electric Seagliders

Abu Dhabi is changing the game for easy transport across the Emirate. It’s not a mode for sightseeing but for commuting. Abu Dhabi has confirmed plans to introduce Seagliders, a futuristic electric craft. It’s designed to slash coastal travel times while keeping emissions at zero.

Abu Dhabi Seagliders Set to Transform Coastal Travel by 2028

A Big Agreement With Bigger Ambitions

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has signed a formal agreement alongside the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, Abu Dhabi Mobility, and VERSA Advanced Maritime Services. The aim is to onboard Seaglider operations across the emirate by 2028.

The partnership focuses on improving coastal connectivity using clean technology. It also ensures the regulatory and operational groundwork is solid.

What Exactly Is A Seaglider?

Seagliders fall under a category called Wing-in-Ground effect craft. In simple terms, they travel just above the water’s surface, using aerodynamic lift to move fast without burning fuel. These vessels are fully electric, produce zero emissions, and move at speeds far beyond traditional marine transport.

Because they skim the surface instead of cutting through waves, they also offer smoother rides and shorter journey times.

VERSA, the UAE’s first Seaglider operator, has been working on this project since 2022.

First Routes: Abu Dhabi City to Al Dhafra

The initial focus will be on routes connecting Abu Dhabi City with the Al Dhafra Region. The distance is long enough to benefit from high-speed travel, yet close enough to support daily use by residents, business travellers, and tourists.

Over time, the network is expected to expand across the emirate and potentially into the wider UAE.

Abu Dhabi’s tourism goals would strengthen along with infrastructure planning.

Why This Matters for Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has spent years investing in smart mobility, from electric buses to autonomous vehicles. Seagliders fit neatly into that vision. If executed well, they could change how coastal cities commute in the future.
