Greenland Gets Its First International Airport In Nuuk
Planning a trip to Greenland has always been a task, especially when it comes to booking flight tickets. The Arctic country’s remote location, icy landscapes, and snowy terrain add to the woes. Well, not anymore! Greenland opened doors to its first-ever international airport in Nuuk on Thursday.
The Nuuk International Airport has a 2.2-kilometre runway. As per the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority, the runway of this new airport was approved on November 26, after a series of test flights. According to the Hindustan Times, Greenland’s new airport will allow the remote country to directly connect with international destinations with large aircraft.

Passenger Traffic Expected To Double In A Year
Greenland is viewing this international airport as a major milestone to boost its tourism. As larger aeroplanes will be allowed to land in the country now, the authorities here are expecting their tourist numbers to double in the next year. As per reports, passenger traffic is expected to double to over 100,000 from more than 50,000 annually in the first year. Last year, around 65,000 tourists arrived in Greenland by air. Of this, 5,000 of them flew through the capital’s existing small, domestic airport.
From June 2025, United Airlines Holdings Inc. will commence a direct route from Newark, New York to Nuuk. Furthermore, SAS AB and Icelandair Group have announced plans to start flights from Copenhagen and Iceland’s Keflavik to this new airport, among other places.
So, if you have Greenland on your travel bucket list, then it’s time to plan a trip to this beautiful country soon!
