Using UPI in other countries is not just beneficial but also makes transactions smoother for Indian travellers. It lets them skip carrying foreign cash, too! After France, Greece and other nations, Spain is also considering introducing UPI payments for Indian travellers. Here’s what you need to know.
Spain May Soon Introduce UPI For Indian Travellers
Many of us know that France became the first European country to accept UPI payments, beginning with the iconic Eiffel Tower. After that, many other countries like Greece, Singapore and Sri Lanka joined the list too. Now, according to NDTV, Indian travellers may soon be able to scan and pay with UPI in Spain as well! India and Spain have agreed to move ahead with technical discussions on linking India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) with Spain’s digital payment platform called Bizum.
Reportedly, the announcement was recently made during Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Spain as part of his four-nation Europe tour. However, the plan is still in the discussion stage. But if everything goes well, Indian travellers will be able to scan a QR code and make payments in Spain, whether it is for shopping or just buying a cup of coffee!

Making Payments To Get Easier For Indians
UPI is a part of every Indian’s life, right? We use it to make payments at restaurants, pay for a cab, or even buy small things like fruits and vegetables from a street-side vendor. It eliminates the hassle of carrying cash and makes payments smoother. But abroad, many Indian travellers face challenges while making payments, along with issues like extra fees, bad exchange rates and more. With UPI in place, they will be able to pay quickly and will also have a record of how much they spent in Indian rupees!
According to News18, UPI for Indian travellers is currently available in France, Greece, Singapore, UAE, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan and Qatar. More and more countries are now integrating UPI to make transactions hassle-free for Indians. Instead of depending on international credit cards, they can simply scan and pay at participating merchants.
