American Airlines Flight, With 160 Passengers, Makes Emergency Landing In Washington Due To Overheated Device

An American Airlines flight, scheduled for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, made an emergency landing at Washington Dulles International Airport on Saturday after smoke emerged from a passenger’s electronic device that was overheating. The emergency prompted an immediate decision to divert the flight, which was carrying 160 passengers.

American Airlines Make Emergency Landing Due To Overheated Device

According to Travel And Tour World, American Airlines flight 357 faced a life-threatening emergency when a passenger’s electronic device began emitting smoke mid-flight. The incident occurred on a Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) flight. It was carrying 160 customers and six crew members.

Once the smoke was detected mid-flight, the cabin crew decided to divert the aircraft to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). The incident occurred on Saturday morning on an Airbus A321neo. As per the American Airlines website, the flight was scheduled to depart from Philadelphia at 9:37 AM, but actually left at 10:49 AM. It made an emergency landing in Washington at 12:03 PM.

Smoke Erupts Mid-Flight

As per American Airlines’ spokesperson, following reports of smoke from a customer’s device, the crew members quickly contained the device prior to landing. All the passengers and crew members deplaned safely. No arrests or injuries were reported in the case.

They added, “‘We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience this caused and thank our crew for their professionalism.”

The airline quickly reaccommodated affected passengers on alternative flights. As per the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, there were no impacts on flight operations at Dulles International after the emergency landing.
