Digital creator David Simpson (@djjsimpson) took to Instagram recently to share a video of a hotel in Peshawar, Pakistan. But it wasn’t your usual hotel! The creator called it the “world’s cheapest hotel” where a night’s stay costs just about 70 Pakistani rupees or ₹22!
The hotel sits atop Peshawar’s old quarters and, as you might expect, offers no rooms, privacy, or Wi-Fi, just simple, worn-out beds and blankets. According to David, however, it offers an authentic experience where you get to sleep like merchants travelling along the Silk Route, which is “quite priceless”.
For him, it wasn’t just the stay, it was more about the people he met that made the experience truly memorable. He interacted with traders transporting fresh produce, vegetables, and fruits to the city, and stopped at the world’s cheapest hotel to catch some rest.
Here’s What Netizens Have To Say About This Stay
The video shows that the “world’s cheapest hotel” had worn-out cots, torn sheets, dirty and smelly toilets, and plenty of mosquitoes. Many comments on the post noted how travellers often equate cheap stays with “authentic experiences” and miss the real ones.
“Why are ‘authentic’ experiences always associated with ‘dirty’ or ‘improvised’. You can still get an authentic experience and equate that with cleanliness and safety,” one comment read.
One user said, “It’s not a hotel if you don’t get your own bedroom and private bathroom. It’s a hostel at best.”
Someone commented, “I am from Peshawar and I never knew it existed. Thanks for sharing this!”
“Authenticity isn’t about dirt or poverty. You can feel it in a Pakistani family’s grand estate, sitting in their living room or on the terrace, sharing daal and lamb surrounded by their warmth and hospitality. It’s the same everywhere — Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, any Asian country. For me, authenticity has nothing to do with being the cheapest,” another comment read.
