Banned On Flight Due To Odour, Chinese Family Eats 5.5 Kg Of Durian In 30 Minutes Outside Thai Airport

A Chinese family met with a conundrum at Thailand’s Chiang Mai International Airport on September 16 when they realised that durian, an exotic tropical Asian fruit, was banned on flights. With the patriarch purchasing 5.5 kg of durian to take back home to China, the flight ban added a dent to their holiday. Throw away the priced durians or polish them before boarding the flight? The Chinese family opted for the latter and stuffed their faces with 5.5 kg of durian outside the Thai airport. Here’s what happened.

This unusual incident made it to Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) by Li, a member of the Durian-eating family outside Thailand’s Chiang Mai Airport. In his caption, he hints at his stubborn father, who bought 5.5 kg of durian before the flight, leaving the family with no other choice but to help him finish it.

As per a report by theSun, Li mentioned on Douyin that his father purchased several boxes of fresh durian in the morning. The patriarch wanted the family to enjoy the exotic fruit native to Thailand before flying home to China. However, after devouring multiple meals during the day, the family didn’t have the appetite to eat durian. So, the fruit known for its yellow flesh and strong odour remained untouched.

Family Apologises To Fellow Passengers For Odour

As they carried boxes of durian with them for their flight back home, Li and his family realised that durian is banned on flights due to its strong odour. Standing at the terminal entrance, the family made the ultimate decision — to not let the fruit go to waste.

So, they assembled to polish 5.5 kg of durian to the very last bite. Each family member contributed by eating four to five pieces of the fleshy fruit. Indulgence came at a cost, where Li looked like he was about to gag on the fruit overload.

The odour was so strong that they apologised to fellow passengers for the lingering smell. The family’s dedication to avoiding wasting the expensive fruit was admired by Netizens online. Their zero-waste commitment was lauded.
