Coimbatore will soon be home to a dedicated conservation centre for the Nilgiri Tahr. These endangered animals are the state animal of Tamil Nadu, and they are extremely important. Chief Minister M K Stalin recently laid the foundation stone for the conservation centre. Here is everything you need to know about this project.

Conservation Centre For Nilgiri Tahr In Coimbatore  


The conservation centre for the endangered Nilgiri Tahr will soon become a reality at Gandhipuram in Coimbatore. According to an X post by @supriyasahuias, the centre is being established at a cost of ₹25.14 crore. It will be a flagship initiative under Project Nilgiri Tahr, which is the Government of Tamil Nadu’s ambitious programme to secure the future of this iconic mountain species.

The centre will showcase the unique ecosystem of the Western Ghats and create immersive interpretation spaces on the life and landscape of the Nilgiri Tahr. It will also serve as a hub for scientific research, conservation education and capacity building. The foundation stone for the centre was laid recently by M. K. Stalin.

Flora & Fauna Gallery, Mini Theatre, Play Area & More 

The centre will also focus on public awareness about the Nilgiri Tahr, policy dialogue and knowledge exchange. According to a report by The Hindu, the objective is to transform conservation activities into knowledge that is easily accessible to students and citizens. The conservation centre for Nilgiri Tahr will come up on 50 cents of land on Dr Nanjappa Road, located between Semmozhi Poonga and Periyar Arivulagam.

Authorities will construct a four-storey building. It will include a flora and fauna gallery, a mini theatre, a biodiversity gallery, a diorama gallery, a tribal and species gallery, and a play area for children. All activities under the project are being coordinated with 15 Nilgiri Tahr-holding forest divisions in Tamil Nadu.
