Egypt: Cairo Announces Ban On Tuk-Tuks With EGP 3,000 Penalty

If you’ve spent even one afternoon in Cairo, you know everything about the wild traffic on major roads. From packed roads to honking tuk-tuks and cars in Cairo, we are already getting exhausted. But this major update might change traffic in Cairo. The city has taken a major step, and now tuk-tuks are officially banned from Cairo’s main roads and big squares.

Cairo Says Goodbye To Tuk-Tuks On Major Roads

Governor Ibrahim Saber has confirmed the decision as stated in SceneNow. But for now, it applies only to all the major roads of Cairo, like Nile Corniche, Salah Salem, Autostrad, and El-Thawra Street. The goal of the ban is to reduce violations, reduce chaos, and improve traffic flow where it matters most.

Why This Ban Now?

We know Tuk-tuks have been an integral part of Cairo’s daily commute for years. It plays an important role in travelling in the narrow neighbourhood streets where taking cars is impossible. But on major roads, they’ve long been a safety challenge.

A recent viral video, as stated by SceneNow, pushed the issue further, finally converting into a complete ban on major roads in Cairo. The video shows a tuk-tuk driver attacking a man during an argument. This led to nationwide conversations about regulation, accountability, and the role of tuk-tuks in a city with more than 10 million people.

What Happens If Drivers Ignore the Ban On Tuk-Tuks In Cairo

Authorities are not just implementing the ban but have also announced a penalty for any driver caught taking a tuk-tuk onto a restricted road.

  • Temporary confiscation of the vehicle
  • Fines that can reach EGP 3,000

The tuk-tuks are now only allowed in residential areas and smaller streets.

How This Affects Daily Life

For many Cairo residents, tuk-tuks are a quick and cheap way to move around smaller neighbourhoods. So, no need to worry about that part as they’re still allowed in local streets and areas.

With this new change, tuk-tuks cutting into lanes or squeezing between cars, we expect the traffic to be a bit smoother, especially during peak hours.

Yes, we agree the transition will take time, it won’t be a smoother experience for all. But long-term, the city aims to reduce accidents and calm down the busiest routes.
