An Indian national was taken into custody in the US for allegedly stabbing two teenagers with a metal fork and slapping a fellow passenger on a Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Germany. The incident took place on Saturday, October 25, forcing the flight to divert to Boston, where authorities arrested the 28-year-old.
Indian Man Stabs Passengers On Chicago-Germany Lufthansa Flight
According to Hindustan Times, an Indian man was charged with “assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm” while travelling on a Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany, on Saturday. The 28-year-old has been identified as Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli and is in the US on a student visa. He had enrolled in a master’s program in biblical studies and has no “lawful status in the United States.”
The accused was on board the Lufthansa flight 431 from Chicago to Germany on October 25 when he allegedly attacked two teenagers, both 17-year-olds, with a metal fork. He stabbed the first teenager in the shoulder with a metal fork, then went on to strike the other on the back of the head.
Accused Taken In Custody
Reportedly, the teenager was napping after a meal when he suddenly woke up and found the accused standing over him. When the flight attendants tried to intervene, the man made a gun gesture with his fingers, pretended to shoot himself, and then allegedly slapped a female passenger. He also reportedly tried to slap one of the flight attendants.
The Chicago to Germany Lufthansa flight was forced to be diverted to Boston Logan International Airport. As soon as the flight landed, the authorities took the accused into custody. According to the US Attorney’s Office, keeping the situation in mind, the man faces a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years, with three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
