Indonesia’s Mount Semeru has erupted. It unleashed clouds of hot ash and a mix of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 13 kilometres down its slopes. Reportedly, the volcano erupted suddenly in Indonesia and left over 170 people stranded at the camping area. They all were rescued safely. Here are the latest updates.
Volcano Erupts Unexpectedly In Indonesia
Terrifying videos of the eruption of Mount Semeru are circulating online. Mount Semeru, the highest peak on Java Island in Indonesia, erupted on Wednesday and unleashed clouds of hot ash, rocks, and lava racing 13 km down the slopes. According to a report by The Economic Times, nearby villages were engulfed in darkness due to the thick ash clouds in the sky. The eruption also forced the authorities to start evacuations. An X user, @surajit_ghosh2, also posted the video of thick clouds in the sky after the volcano eruption in Indonesia.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, more than 170 people, including climbers, porters, guides, tourism officials and tourists, had started their way up the 12,060-foot mountain in the Lumajang district on Wednesday. They became stranded at the Ranu Kumbolo camping area when the volcano unexpectedly erupted. The rescue operation was concluded on Thursday and everyone was reported safe. The Ranu Kumbolo area is a safe zone. It was not in the path of the hot cloud flow. However, the climbers might have been exposed to volcanic ash.

Nearly 1,000 Residents Evacuated
According to a report by Hindustan Times, the eruption was so terrifying that scientists raised the volcano’s alert to the highest level. A series of pyroclastic density currents travelled down the mountain slopes. Avalanches of volcanic material were also seen descending through the Besuk Kobokan River valley on the southern flank.
People were warned to stay away from the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as the searing gas rushed down from Mount Semeru’s slopes. You would also like to know that nearly 1,000 residents from three villages were evacuated to government shelters. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
