Japan Hit By 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake; Issues Tsunami Warning For Iwate Prefecture

On November 9, Sunday, Japan was hit by a 6.8 magnitude offshore earthquake on its coast. After the earthquake struck the nation’s northern Pacific region, Japan issued a tsunami warning. This happened at 5:03 pm (local time) in the water body off Iwate. Japan Meteorological Agency warned that a tsunami of up to three feet or one metre can strike the nation. Here’s more to it.

Japan Struck By 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake

As per a report by Firstpost, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) put out a warning that owing to the earthquake, seismic activity may generate a tsunami. This tsunami could be fatal as it could go as deep as one metre or three feet high. This tsunami advisory in Japan has been issued for the Iwate coast. Residents have been advised to steer clear of coastal areas.

Annually, Japan, an archipelago nation, witnesses about 1500 earthquakes. While most are mild, the damage depends on the location of the earthquake and its depth.

Japan Issues Tsunami Warning

As per a report by The Japan Times, Ofunato, a city in the Iwate Prefecture, the second largest Japanese prefecture, famous for mineral wealth, has issued an evacuation instruction. About 6138 people belonging to 2825 households in the coastal areas of the city have been directed to evacuate their residences. Due to the 6.8 magnitude earthquake, East Japan Railway’s Tohoku Shinkansen suspended its operations between Sendai and Shin-Aomori stations as it faced a power issue.

Japan is an earthquake and tsunami-prone area as it’s one of the world’s most seismically active countries. It’s perceived above the Pacific “Ring of Fire”. Earlier, a 6.26 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Honshu, the country’s largest island, this includes Iwate.
