Mumbai To Deploy Plastic-Trapping Barrier
Marine pollution is one of the biggest problems the city has been facing for years. Now the city is all set to take a step forward to stop these plastics from entering the ocean. According to the Hindustan Times, Mumbai is all set to install specialised barriers specifically designed to stop the flow of plastic waste into the Arabian Sea. This initiative is said to recover at least 61 tonnes of plastic every year from Trombay and Malad waterways in the city.

Led by a Netherlands-based non-profit organisation, The Ocean Cleanup, known for developing technologies to remove plastic from the oceans. They collaborated with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board to help the city control the marine pollution. The first deployments will focus on the Trombay and Malad waterways. The two waterways are said to be among the main contributors to ocean-bound plastic waste.
All You Need To Know About The Initiative
Data from the non-profit highlights that a mere 0.03% of the world’s rivers, roughly 1,000 out of 3 million, generate nearly 80% of plastic flowing into the oceans.
As per The Tribune, the project is a part of a global ’30 cities programme’ that targets the world’s most polluted waterways. The main focus of this initiative will be on urban runoff and industrial discharge. As per officials, stopping waste at these important intervention points is necessary for safeguarding the coastal biodiversity and marine ecosystem.
