Travellers, here’s an important update if you are planning a trip to Japan. The country might soon become more expensive for tourists as the government has decided to increase airport departure taxes, visa fees, and introduce pre-screening systems. Here’s everything you need to know.
Japan Plans To Hike Visa Fees For The First Time In 50 Years

Japan has always been known as a culturally rich destination that can be explored on a reasonable budget. But now, travellers planning a trip to Japan may have to spend more. As per a report by Business Today, Japan plans to raise its visa application fees for the first time in nearly 50 years. The new fees will be closer to the rates charged by the US and European nations. This move comes as Japan aims to balance rising administrative costs amid a growing number of tourists in the country.
According to Business Standard, the cost for a single-entry visa to Japan has remained around ¥3,000 (₹1,735 approx) since 1978, while a multiple-entry visa costs about ¥6,000 (₹3,471 approx.). Both these rates are much lower compared to visa fees in the United States and many European countries, but that might soon change. Additionally, apart from visa fees, Japan is also planning to increase its ‘departure tax’, an international tourist fee currently set at ¥1,000 (₹578 approx.). This fee is collected from both foreign nationals and Japanese citizens. All these changes might come into effect from 2026.

Authorities To Launch New Screening System
According to VisaGuide.World, Japan will also introduce a pre-arrival screening system for travellers starting in 2028. The decision aims to make the travel process more efficient. Similar to the US Electronic System for Travel Authorisation, Japan plans to roll out its own electronic screening platform. And yes, these pre-arrival screening systems cost money!
In 2024, around 36.87 million foreign tourists visited Japan, a 47.1% increase compared to the number of tourists in 2023. The tourism industry plays a major role in boosting Japan’s economy, especially in cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. However, with the upcoming fee hikes and new rules, travel to Japan might not remain as affordable as before. Let’s see what impact these changes bring to travellers in the coming years.
