A stampede at the holy Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar on Saturday resulted in the tragic deaths of six people and the injuries of at least 28 others, turning a spiritual visit into a terrible tragedy. The incident happened on the stairs that led to the hilltop shrine, which was crowded with worshippers during the holy month of Sawan.

Stampede At Haridwar’s Mansa Devi Temple

The stampede took place on the staircase leading to the temple, which is situated on a hilltop. According to the NDTV reports, the local police revealed that the chaos began when a rumour spread about electrocution on the temple path. Panic set in quickly, and people started pushing and shoving in an attempt to escape the area. The narrow pathway couldn’t handle the sudden rush, leading to people falling and getting trampled.

Haridwar’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Pramendra Singh Dobal, said, “A rumour about an electric current on the temple path caused panic. People started running. Six people have died, and several others are injured. The rescue operation began immediately,” NDTV reported. Among the six people who died are three young men aged 18 and a 12-year-old boy. At least 28 people were injured, of whom five are in serious condition.

Massive Crowd Panics After Electrocution Rumours

The incident took place during Sawan, one of the holiest months for Lord Shiva’s devotees. Every year, lakhs of Kanwariyas and pilgrims come to Haridwar to worship and visit temples like Mansa Devi. Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey said a massive crowd had gathered at the temple before the stampede took place.

Soon after the stampede, Uttarakhand’s State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the local police reached the spot. Injured people were taken to hospitals, and the area was cleared for further safety.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami issued a statement saying, “This is very distressing. Our teams are on-site and helping with relief work. I am personally monitoring the situation. Praying to Mother Goddess for the safety of all devotees.” The Uttarakhand government has announced financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for the families of those who died and ₹50,000 for those who were injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow at the loss of lives, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and shared his prayers for the injured.

This tragic event has sparked concerns about crowd control and security at places of worship.
