Wait! Chocolate Without Cocoa? Nestlé’s New Cocoa-Free Range Is Replacing Real Cocoa; Here’s Why

Nestlé cocoa-free

If you thought cocoa was the most essential ingredient in chocolate, you might be surprised to learn that Nestlé has introduced a new Snack Vibes line featuring cocoa-free chocolate. Yes, you read that right! It looks like chocolate as we know it might soon undergo a major shift, and there’s a reason behind it too!

Nestlé Unveils Its Cocoa-Free Innovation In Germany

According to Green Queen Media, Nestlé, one of the world’s largest food companies, has replaced real cocoa with a fermented seed-based alternative in a product line in Germany. The company joined hands with Planet A Foods, a startup that makes cocoa-free chocolate using fermented plant-based ingredients, to launch a new confectionery range in Germany.

Each flavour uses ChoViva, developed by Planet A Foods, instead of conventional chocolate. The ingredient is made from fermented and roasted sunflower and grape seeds and is designed to replicate the taste of chocolate without using cocoa.

The ingredient is available in vegan, dark, milk, and white chocolate-style formats and has already been used in over 120 products across 10 countries in Europe and Asia. Companies such as Lindt & Sprüngli, AEON, Lufthansa, and Lidl have partnered to use it.

Nestlé’s Snack Vibes, marketed under the Choco Crossies label, will be available in classic, hazelnut, and salted popcorn caramel flavours starting next month. The product will contain 74% ChoViva and 26% cornflakes, and will be priced at €2.79 (₹298) for a 100g pack.

How Is This Approach Climate-Friendly?

Now, Nestlé’s adoption of cocoa-free chocolate is actually a climate-friendly move too! Did you know that chocolate production is one of the biggest food-related contributors to the climate crisis? This is mainly due to the significant greenhouse gas emissions and widespread tropical deforestation linked to cocoa production. It is also highly water-intensive, on average, producing a single bar of chocolate requires about 1,700 litres of water.

Choosing cocoa-free chocolate like Planet A Foods’s ChoViva helps Nestlé lower these emissions by 82-91%–depending on the type of chocolate! This could have a worldwide impact because the company makes up for nearly 10% of the global confectionery market!
