Why Did Air Canada Suspend 623 Flight Operations, Impacting 100,000 People?

Air Canada has announced a complete shutdown of operations on Saturday morning. This happened because more than 10,000 Air Canada flight attendants went on a strike, following a 72-hour strike notice. This marks the first strike by flight attendants since 1985. Scroll on to know more about this.

Air Canada Attendants Go On Strike; Flight Ops Cancelled

According to Deccan Herald, on Saturday morning, Air Canada’s flight attendants walked off the job and this strike has impacted more than 600 flights and left over 100,000 people across the globe in lurch. The strike was confirmed by Canadian Union of Public Employees spokesman Hugh Pouliot. He stated that the airline officials and the flight attendants were not able to reach a deal, resulting in the suspension of all flight operations.

The airline took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce, “As of 8 pm EDT on August 15, 2025, this is the operational wind down impact due to the impending CUPE strike: Total flights cancelled: 623 , People impacted: 100,100.”

Canadian Union of Public Employees also announced via a post on its website: “We are now officially on strike.” Air Canada has advised affected passengers not to go to the airport unless they have a confirmed ticket. According to the airline’s spokesperson, around “130,000 customers will be impacted each day that the strike continues.”

The Air Canada strike comes at the peak summer travel season. As per reports, flight attendants went on strike after Canada’s largest airline and the union failed to reach an agreement on pay and working conditions. As per the flight attendants’ complaints, the airline has not been able to tackle issues like “longstanding fatigue, fair pay and respect for frontline staff”. Furthermore, the contract talks have now extended for about eight months. However, they have still not struck a tentative deal.
