Why Has Italy Hiked The Entry Fee From ₹550 To ₹771 For Visiting Pantheon In Rome?

Pantheon Rome entry fee

Are you planning a trip to Italy soon? If yes, then visiting the famous Pantheon might already be on your list. The former Roman temple, now a church, is one of the most influential ancient monuments in the world. You should know that Italy has now increased its entry fee for tourists, which can make your visit to this iconic landmark more expensive. Here’s what you need to know.

Entry Fee Hiked For Pantheon In Rome

The Pantheon in Rome, Italy, is famous for its massive 2,000-year-old concrete dome. It features a central opening or ‘oculus’, which is its only source of light. The structure, which was formerly a Roman temple, is now a church and is known as an engineering marvel. The place attracts lakhs of tourists every year. But according to The Local Italy, the country’s culture ministry has recently announced a hike in the entry fee.

From July 1, tourists will have to pay €7 (₹771 approx.) instead of €5(₹550 approx.). The decision comes after a new agreement between the ministry and the Diocese of Rome. However, the increase applies only to full-price adult tickets. Tickets for visitors aged 18 to 25 remain €2(₹220 approx.). Apart from this, all existing free admission categories, including under 18, the first Sunday of each month, and those attending religious services, remain unchanged.

Why The Entry Fee Has Increased

According to The Local Italy, the entry fee does not apply to residents of Rome. For them, entry remains free under a policy introduced on April 1 last year. But why the increase now? Reportedly, the extra €2 per ticket will go towards the Piano Olivetti per la Cultura. This is a state programme that supports community libraries in disadvantaged areas across Italy.

Moreover, these funds will also help support cultural and arts projects financially in less well-served parts of the country. You should also know that just last year, Rome introduced a €2(₹220 approx.) entry fee for the Trevi Fountain, another famous tourist landmark. Reportedly, the Pantheon attracted around 4.5 million visitors in 2024, making it one of the most visited monuments in the country.
