When we think of ice cream, a sweet dessert comes to mind. The term is universally understood, meaning wherever you go, ‘ice cream’ holds the same meaning. But in North Korea, not anymore. According to a report by The Times of India, Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un has banned the use of the word ‘ice cream’ simply because it comes from English. Instead, he has ordered people to use state-approved alternatives like ‘eseukimo’ or ‘eoreunboseungi’, which translate to ‘ice confection’.

The ban is part of a broader campaign to eliminate foreign words, particularly those that come from English and South Korean usage. Not only that, but even the word ‘hamburger’ is now banned. It will be replaced with ‘dajin-gogi gyeoppang’, which translates to ‘double bread with ground beef’. Karaoke machines are being renamed as ‘on-screen accompaniment machines’.

North Korea Aims To Keep North Korean Expressions “Authentic”

As per the same report, Kim Jong Un’s government believes that literal translations will help keep North Korean expressions authentic. The move is also meant to reduce the influence of outside cultures. Additionally, tourism guides in North Korea are now undergoing a strict three-month training programme in Wonsan and other destinations. They are being told to avoid English and South Korean words while interacting with both locals and foreigners.

The question everyone is wondering is, why is Kim Jong Un targeting language? In North Korea, language has long been a tool of ideological control. By dictating which words people can and cannot use, the government shapes communication and, in turn, everyday interactions. All in all, North Korea aims to shield its society from outside influences by enforcing these bizarre rules.
