Why Must Eggs In Uttar Pradesh Carry Expiry Date Stamps From April 1?

The Uttar Pradesh government has recently announced a new food-safety rule that will require a mandatory expiry date marking on every egg sold in the state from April 1st. Do you know what the real reason behind this rule is? Read on to find out.

Uttar Pradesh To Mandate Expiry Date Stamps On Eggs

As per a report by NDTV, the new rule is aimed at improving consumer awareness and ensuring better monitoring of fresh eggs across the supply chain. The order applies to eggs produced, transported, and sold within the state. The Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration informed The Times of India that the move is expected to change how eggs are handled at farms, wholesale markets, and retail points. Under the new rule, egg producers and distributors must stamp both the date of laying and the expiry date details directly on each egg.

Why Is the Rule Introduced?

Eggs are one of the most common sources of protein consumption and are often sold individually in open markets. Until now, there was no uniform system to track how old an egg was at the time of sale. As per the news portal, state authorities stated the lack of detailed data made it difficult for consumers to evaluate the freshness of the egg and for inspectors to verify compliance during checks. The new move is intended to bridge the gap by making information visible for both consumers and authorities.

As per the Food and Drug Administration, eggs are considered safe for consumption for 28 days from the date of laying. Any egg sold beyond this period will be treated as a violation of food-safety norms. The rule applies regardless of whether eggs are sold loose or in packaged trays.

Consumers are advised to check stamped dates on the eggs before purchasing, from April 1st onwards. The government has clarified that this move is meant to improve transparency and food safety, not to restrict the supply of eggs. Uttar Pradesh will be among the first states to mandate egg-level date marking.
