All You Need To Know About The Tulip Festival In Srinagar
Srinagar’s Tulip Festival is an annual celebration that showcases a wide variety of picturesque tulips. Hosted by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to boost tourism in the area, the festival is celebrated for 15-20 days, coinciding with the period when tulips bloom in Kashmir. This usually takes place around the last week of March to mid-April, depending upon the weather conditions.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden is ensconced between the Dal Lake and the Zabarwan Hills and offers a stunning background to the wide range of flowers blooming there. Flowers of different hues bloom and create a rainbow of tulips in the garden. In 2024, more than 17 lakh tulips, of over 60 varieties, were showcased in the garden. Millions of visitors, both domestic and foreign, visited the garden to see the Tulip Festival in Srinagar.
History & What To Expect At This Flowery Festival
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden was set up in 2007 by the then-chief minister of the erstwhile state Ghulam Nabi Azad. The aim was to boost tourism in the area in spring, which was earlier limited to summers and winters. The garden started with 50,000 tulip bulbs imported from The Netherlands. It instantly attracted a lot of tourists and has been steadily growing ever since. Besides tulips, you can also find 46 varieties of flowers. This includes flowers like hyacinths, daffodils and ranunculus, all brought from Holland as well.
The Tulip Festival is hosted just 9 kilometres from Srinagar. It is easily excessive by local transport or private cars from the airport. More details about this year’s edition are awaited. So, stay tuned!
