It’s no secret that trees take in carbon dioxide and give us oxygen to breathe. And now, to support the ecosystem in the UAE, the plan is to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030. As it happens, this initiative has already begun with the plan of planting 10,000 mangrove trees planted all across the UAE this year. Here’s everything you need to know about the massive plantation drive.
10000 Mangroves To Be Planted By the End Of 2023
As mentioned above, the commitment to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030 has already begun with 10,000 mangrove trees. In case you didn’t know, these were featured in the 51st National Day celebrations, and now they will be planted all across the seven emirates by the end of this year. According to a news report by the National News, the National Day Mangrove Project began on Thursday, May 11. The Project Will Raise Forest Cover To 483 Km²
As it happens, 2,000 volunteers of already signed up to participate in the plantation drives and there are 10 such confirmed events that have already been scheduled for the year. Moreover, these events will happen in the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Ajman as well. As such, this project was launched after President Sheikh Mohammed announced that 2023 will be the Year of Sustainability. So, the reason why mangrove has been chosen for the plantation drive is that it’s a core part of the ecosystem. At present, there are 60,000 mangroves that form the forest spanning 183 km². These trees capture a whopping 43,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Once these 100 million mangroves will be planted, the coverage will increase to 483 km². Not to mention, the forests will capture approximately 1,15,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Moreover, seed-firing drones also took to the skies in Abu Dhabi’s Al Dharfa region, as a part of the first phase of the drone mangrove plantation project.
