With the onset of January 2025, Premarital Genetic Testing for all citizens who intend to get married in the UAE will become a mandatory process. Yes, this development comes at a time when pre-marital medical examination was mandatory for not just the citizens, but even for expats, but genetic testing was optional. However, after the Emirates Genome Council approved the initiative, it will now become mandatory.
Premarital Genetic Testing To Become Mandatory In UAE
According to a report by Khaleej Times, it was revealed that Genetic Premarital Testing will now become mandatory for citizens ahead of their marriage from January 2025. This development comes after the report mentioned that more than 570 genetic mutations can cause hereditary diseases. These can be anything from Spinal Muscular Atrophy to Hearing Loss or Even Cystic Fibrosis. As a result, the aim of the strategy is to create an integrated national genetic database to identify genetic diseases among Emiratis by helping them with early medical intervention.

It Will Become Mandatory From January 2025
As emphasised by the Ministry of Health and Prevention, this would help in transforming the healthcare sector. As a result, with the help of future technologies, sustainable development will be ensured thereby enhancing the quality of life. In fact, the report also mentions that medical staff has already been provided with specialised expertise and guidelines. This is obviously besides the technical infrastructure for the testing that they will require.
For those who aren’t aware, Premarital Genetic Testing helps in assessing the risk of passing genetic disorders to a couple’s children. It helps to identify the genes that a partner carries for several hereditary conditions. As a result, these tests help in making informed decisions by the partners that can govern the health of their future children.
So, if you are getting married in the UAE or know someone who will be taking this important step in 2025, do let them know about this mandatory testing.
