UAE Expats Explore D7 Visa AKA Retiree Visa For Portugal; Here’s Why

It seems that UAE expats are increasingly thinking of gaining access to Portugal’s D7 Visa. Well, the D7 Visa, for those who don’t know, is often regarded as a ‘Passive Income Visa or Retirement Visa’. It is a visa that allows non-EU citizens to settle in Portugal without having to run a business or take a job. However, it must not be confused with the D2 Visa, which targets business investors and entrepreneurs. Here’s why the expat population might be looking to explore this passive visa.

Why Do Some UAE Expat Find The Portugal D7 Visa Attractive?

As revealed in a report by the Gulf News, UAE residents find the D7 Visa by Portugal increasingly attractive for a variety of reasons. It is especially attractive to those who want residency without having the need to start a company. Those who want visa-free Schengen access, especially when it comes to travel or relocation, also consider this route.

In fact, many expats also find it attractive if they are looking for early retirement, or if they want to work remotely from a more relaxed and beachy destination. It is also perfect for those who are looking to apply for permanent residency and want to plan a pathway towards the same. Another category of expats who are finding such visas attractive are those who are looking for cost-effective alternatives to the expensive Golden Visa.

But the next question that arises is how much passive income do you need to show with proof to be eligible? Well, as of now the minimum required income is AED33,500 per year for a single applicant. It should be 50% more for a spouse and about 30% more for each dependent child. Not to mention, to be eligible. You must also have the following types of passive income:

  • A pension or retirement income
  • Dividend from investment’s rental income from real estate
  • Royalties or intellectual property earnings

The proof for this income should be in the form of proper documentation through bank statements for at least six months. Not to mention, it is important to have a Portuguese bank account, and you will have to show proof of residential address in Portugal.

What Are The Benefits Of This Visa?

With this visa, you get access to several rights and inclusions. These are inclusive of Portugal’s public healthcare and education. Not to mention, it gives you the ability to work or freelance if you want. Additionally, there’s also legal protection under Portuguese law, which also allows family reunification rights. In fact, you can also get a Portuguese passport through this visa! You receive a one-year residence permit, and then you can renew it for a two-year period. After five years have passed, you can also apply for permanent resident or citizenship. You will, however, need to pass a basic Portuguese language test in order to become a citizen.

So if you are a UAE-based remote worker or retiree who is looking for a long-term European life ahead, then the visa is exactly what you need.
