UAE: Hotels Save About AED5,00,000 In 6 Months By Cutting Down Food Waste; Here’s How

This is not a secret that a lot of food goes to waste during buffet. As people then fill up their plates with a lot more food than they can actually finish, the leftovers generally end up downstairs. However, hotels in the UAE are acknowledging this problem and are actively implementing ways in which this food waste can be minimised. Here’s how hotels across the UAE are saving on food waste.

St. Regis Abu Dhabi Saves AED480,620 In Food Waste

Hotels are implementing several strategies that help them save money by cutting down on food waste. For instance, the St. Regis Abu Dhabi has introduced a system that aims to reduce food waste. Yes, they have achieved a saving of a whopping AED480,620 in food waste. So, translating in terms of weight, this amounts to a massive 25 tonnes. Called the Winnow system, this critical initiative has helped the hotel achieve this fantastic goal.

At this point, it’s worth mentioning that this hotel prepares 1000 meals daily and they also collaborated with ‘Stop Wasting Food’. This is an initiative undertaken by Marriott hotels across the world. As it happens, they also ensure that food handlers receive ample training in recipe costing and waste reduction techniques to achieve the result.

Rotana Has Also Saved A Lot Through The Reduction Of Food Waste

On the other hand, Rotana has employed a compatible approach, as they have partnered with Chef’s Eye to optimise food management. Yes, as revealed by the Khaleej Times, it was mentioned that this has resulted in a 20% reduction in the overall trim waste. Not to mention, buffet stations have also seen a 15% reduction in food wastage. Rotana is known for serving over 6 million guests annually, as a result, it manages 273 food and beverage outlets. Not to mention, they’ve also signed an agreement with the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, Ne’ma, which prioritises food waste reduction. In fact, also to close collaboration with local charities.

The charity also plays an important role in reducing surplus food. They have been directing the surplus towards the community. For instance, from 2023 to 2024, the food bank successfully recycled more than 2 million from land.
