Yes, from July 2024 onwards, Abu Dhabi has established a law that penalises social media influencers and establishments that are engaging in advertising and providing advertising services without a license. As it happens, since July, a new rule has been imposed by Abu Dhabi that enforces strict rules on social media usage in the nation. Yes, there are in fact seven things that you must absolutely avoid on social media in order to respect the norms and also avoid penalties.
What Sort Of Content To Avoid?
Take a look at the kinds of content that can land you in trouble!
- Criticising or attacking the President of the UAE or rulers of other emirates. Any criticism or attack on the country’s system of governance or harm caused to the higher interest of the state is banned.
- There should be no spreading of rumours or sharing of misleading news that can cause harm to the economic system of the nation.
- Any opinions that violate public morals, promote destructive principles, or insult minors are also included in this list.
- Distortion of discussions or public sessions of courts or even regulatory bodies in the country
One must not deliberately spread false news, fabricated documents, or falsely attributing them to others. - One must not criticise the actions of public officials or a person in a public representative position.
As such, you can also be heavily penalised or fined up to AED500,000 if you fail to follow the rules. Not to mention, you can also get imprisoned for up to 5 years for publishing any news, information, visual materials, or rumours online with the intention of harming the reputation or status of the country.
So, you might want to be more considerate while posting online in the UAE.
