Just when many were packing their bags for spiritual travel, Saudi Arabia hit the brakes. To keep things in order during the sacred Hajj & Umrah season, the Kingdom has temporarily banned visas from 14 countries, including India and Pakistan. But don’t panic just yet, we’re unpacking everything in plain English. So sit back and get the scoop.
Umrah: Saudi Arabia Imposes Temporary Visa Ban On India, Pakistan & 12 More Countries
The visa ban isn’t forever. But yes, it’s in full swing until mid-June, or in simpler terms, till the Hajj season ends. And this isn’t just about Hajj visas. It includes Umrah, family, and business visas. The cut-off date for Umrah visas is April 13, so tick-tock if you’re thinking of a last-minute trip!
The reason? Well, the 2024 Hajj season turned out to be chaos in robes. Over 1,000 people lost their lives, many of whom weren’t even officially registered. So, Saudi officials decided no more unauthorised pilgrim gate-crashing. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman personally directed a crackdown on unauthorised Hajj attempts, and this visa freeze is part of that clean-up.
Who’s Affected?
Here’s the not-so-exclusive guest list of countries now facing the visa pause:
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Nigeria, Jordan, Algeria, Sudan, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Yemen, and Lebanon. (Yes, 14 in total — we counted thrice.)
If you’re from any of these countries and you’re planning to enter Saudi Arabia for Umrah, business, or a family visit, it’s time to pause those plans. Any attempt to enter the country with alternative motives may lead to a five-year ban. Not worth it.
Why All The Fuss?
Let’s break it down. Hajj is one of the world’s largest annual gatherings. Millions flock to Makkah each year, and that means things can spiral into a logistical nightmare if not tightly managed. After the 2024 tragedy — caused by heat, overcrowding, and unauthorised attendees- the Saudi government isn’t taking chances.
They’re tightening the rules not to be the bad guys but to make sure registered pilgrims can perform their rituals safely and peacefully. They’re also trying to prevent people from sneaking in using other visa types and then staying illegally, a problem that’s become all too common.
To help genuine pilgrims, Saudi Arabia launched a digital Hajj guide in 16 languages, ensuring everyone’s on the same page.
If you’ve got your heart set on Umrah, you can apply before 13 April. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game until mid-June, when everything settles. For everyone else, now’s a great time to double-check your travel plans and stay informed.

Final Word
Saudi Arabia’s temporary visa ban might feel like a sudden jolt, but it’s rooted in real concerns. The message is loud and clear: registered pilgrims only. And while it may disrupt a few plans, it’s all in favour of safety, order, and respect for the sacred pilgrimage.
