World population has always been a major concern for a number of reasons. Recently, the United Nations or the UN released a report on the prospective world population in the future. It had many insights into the future of the world’s population. One of the major takeaways from the report was that the world population will peak within this century. Here are all of the other important details that you would need to know about this new report.
Key Insights From UN World Population Prospects 2024
According to a press release which was recently shared by the UN, the world population is expected to peak in this century. It is projected to reach a whopping 10.3 billion by 2080 and will then decline towards the end of the century to 10.2 billion.
The report also stated that women today, on average, bear one fewer child than in 1990. Fertility rates, globally, have also dropped from 3.3 live births per woman to 2.3. More than half of the countries worldwide have a fertility rate that is lower than the level required to maintain a population without migration.
Interestingly, it is also estimated that during the 2070s, people aged 65 years will outnumber people aged 18 years. Hence, in order to support the workforce, training should be done to cater to a wider range of ages.
Other Important Insights To Know From This Report
This also means that countries with a declining population only have a limited period of time to benefit from the rapid growth in the concentration of the workforce.
It is also estimated that for many countries, migration will be the main driver of growth. Another key insight is that gender equality has been one of the biggest factors in helping curb the rapid population growth.
The report also found that childbearing at an early age for women is linked to a number of health problems. Early childbearing can harm both the mother and the child.
