First up, we have the Monastery of Saint Hilarion/Tell Umm Amer in Palestine. Nestled in the heart of the Gaza Strip, this site is not just a relic; it’s one of the oldest historical marvels in the Middle East. Think of it as a time capsule from a bygone era, offering a window into ancient religious life and architectural prowess.

Next, we journey to Jordan, where Umm el Jimal stands proudly. This archaeological wonder isn’t just about ancient stones and ruins; it’s a testament to the ingenious ways its inhabitants adapted to a water-scarce environment. The site displays a fascinating blend of Nabataean, Roman, and Byzantine influences, showcasing the region’s historical melting pot.

Lastly, Saudi Arabia rolls out the red carpet for the Cultural Landscape of the Al Faw Archaeological Area. This site is a treasure trove of ancient human settlements, offering a glimpse into the lives of people who lived in this vast and historically rich region. It’s one of the largest archaeological sites in Saudi Arabia and holds secrets from a time long past.

Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) and Chairman of the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARC-WH), couldn’t be more thrilled. He applauded the inclusion of these sites, noting that it amplifies Arab heritage on the global stage. According to him, this recognition reflects a growing commitment to preserving the region’s cultural and natural treasures.

Shaikh Khalifa emphasised that the ARC-WH, hosted by Bahrain since 2012, has been instrumental in supporting Arab countries in their heritage preservation efforts. He also highlighted the centre’s dedication to protecting sites listed as World Heritage in Danger. This collective effort underscores a robust desire to safeguard and celebrate the rich history that these sites represent.

ARC-WH’s Role in Heritage Preservation

During this year’s World Heritage Committee meeting, ARC-WH organised side events with international organisations, focusing on the preservation and conservation of Arab cultural and natural heritage. Their mission: to offer advice and support to Arab nations and monitor the status of their World Heritage sites.

The inclusion of these three remarkable sites is more than just an honour; it’s a testament to the enduring legacy and ongoing efforts to protect and celebrate Arab heritage. As we cheer for these new additions, let’s also appreciate the hard work and dedication that goes into preserving our collective history for future generations.
