‘Unreal Beauty!’ User’s Documentary On Aurora In Ladakh Takes The Internet By Storm

Aurora In Ladakh

Seeing the aurora borealis is the dream of many, typically requiring travel to polar regions. But seeing the aurora in Ladakh, India, is a rare spectacle. Filmmaker and explorer Vibhu Grover has captured this rare phenomenon in his new documentary film, with both the breathtaking aurora and his solo cycling journey to the world’s highest motorable pass.

An Unprecedented Journey To Photograph The Aurora In Ladakh

In his documentary, Vibhu Grover chronicles his solo cycling expedition to Umling La, the planet’s highest motorable pass, which is more than 19,000 feet above sea level.  Subjected to fierce weather conditions ranging from solar storms to sandstorms, he documents the physical as well as the mental struggles encountered at such an altitude.

The film offers an up-close understanding of the forbearance that goes into undertaking such a mission. Capturing the aurora borealis in Ladakh is very rare due to its geographical location. Grover’s photographs provide onlookers with an unusual experience of the phenomenon rarely witnessed in such places.

His dedication involved enduring bad weather and shooting in challenging terrain, all without the help of logistics to support filming. Aurora borealis, commonly called the northern lights, is generally observed in polar latitudes.

But when there was a giant geomagnetic storm in May 2024, an unusual phenomenon of auroras was observed even in lower latitudes, including Ladakh. The Indian Astronomical Observatory at Hanle recorded this unusual phenomenon in the area.

One user commented, ‘You’re so underrated bro, I hope everybody sees the struggle that is cycling already.’ Others are mesmerised by the visuals he had captured.

Apart from the aesthetic value and internet buzz, the documentary is also a testament to the human spirit to survive against all odds. Grover’s journey is a testament to the passion and determination behind individuals pursuing extraordinary dreams.

His journey is an inspiration to dreamers and adventurers everywhere, proving that through willpower, even the most insurmountable obstacles can be conquered. For anyone interested in going on this amazing experience, the full documentary is available on YouTube.
