Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) organised the Global Food Regulators Summit 2023 on 20 and 21 July in Delhi’s Manekshaw Centre. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister inaugurated the summit in the presence of other ministers and attendees. FSSAI CEO, G Kamala Vardhana Rao was also present at the summit and he shared some shocking facts about unsafe food.

On the first day of the Global Food Regulatory Summit, G Kamala Vardhana Rao discussed some frightening details about how unsafe food is destroying lives. He presented a report at the summit that focused on the number of lives getting affected because of unsafe food.

  • The report stated that these kinds of food are the reason behind about 600 million infections each and every year.
  • Not just such an alarming rise in infections, unsafe food also leads to around 4.2 lakh deaths per year.

The numbers are extremely daunting and clearly specify how it is necessary to implement enhanced food safety protocols and standards to control such life-threatening incidents.

FSSAI CEO also shared how food regulators need to build a proper ecosystem under the One Health approach, according to a report by BioTecNika.

  • Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya was quoted saying “Safe food and good health are complementary to each other.”
  • He emphasised the importance of focusing on different problems such as food grains and food safety for global sustainable development.
  • Also, he asked the participant nations to come together and work to find solutions for food shortage.
  • The Union Health Minister inaugurated “Food-o-Copoeia” during this summit. Food-o-Copoeia is a detailed guide focusing on standards of different categories related to food products and all the requirements for those categories.
