The Uttar Pradesh government is taking a significant step towards enhancing religious tourism in Ayodhya and Varanasi by introducing electric boats for adventure water activities and boat rides. This initiative aligns with the state’s broader efforts to modernise and sustainably promote tourism in these culturally rich cities.

In both Ayodhya and Varanasi, the government plans to launch four specialised electric boats. These boats are designed to provide an environmentally friendly and comfortable experience for tourists exploring the sacred rivers of Saryu in Ayodhya and Ganga in Varanasi.

  • Ayodhya: Three electric boats will operate from Nayaghat on the Saryu River. One of these boats is air-conditioned with a seating capacity of 50 passengers. It will ensure a comfortable ride even during the hot summer months. The other two boats are non-air-conditioned with a seating capacity of 30 passengers each.
  • Varanasi: A 50-seater air-conditioned electric boat will be available for tourists at Ravidas Ghat on the Ganga River. It will offer a serene and cool environment for those wishing to take in the city’s spiritual ambiance from the water.

Operational And Environmental Advantages

By utilising electricity instead of traditional fuel, these boats significantly reduce carbon emissions. It will contribute to cleaner air and water in these sacred cities. Electric engines produce less noise than conventional ones, preserving the tranquil atmosphere that pilgrims and tourists seek in Ayodhya and Varanasi. The air-conditioned boats also offer a comfortable option for tourists, especially during the hotter months, making the river

The Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC) will oversee the management and operation of these boats. The docking and charging facilities for the boats will be available at the respective ghats, according to the Business Standard reports. The boats will initially operate under a 10-year lease and adhere strictly to guidelines set by the Tourism Department, the Inland Vessel Act, and international standards.

These electric boats will promote electric-based adventure water activities in Ayodhya and Varanasi. These new electric boats represent a blend of tradition and modernity. They will certainly enhance the spiritual and tourist experience in Ayodhya and Varanasi.
