Uttarakhand’s Jim Corbett National Park Completes 87 Years
In 1936, under the British era, the national park was created and given the name Hailey National Park. In fact, 87 years have passed since the establishment of this national park. The goal was to control the rapidly decreasing population of tigers. The name Haley National Park was given in honour of the then-Governor Haley.
Following independence, it was known as Ganga National Park, and efforts were made to conserve tigers there, with encouraging results. Ganga National Park’s name was eventually changed to Corbett National Park in 1957. Jim Edward Corbett, a British commander, inspired its naming. In comparison to other Indian National Parks, this park is well known for having the highest concentration of tigers. One of the best activities is a jeep safari. - It is one of the oldest habitats for tigers in India.
- In 1973, ‘Project Tiger’ was launched at this national park.
- Jim Corbett National Park is India’s first tiger habitat.
- 75 per cent of the area is covered by Sal trees.
- The only coniferous tree found is pine.
- Among the flora, Semal, Dhaka and Kacharan are predominant ones.
- Besides tigers, the place is home to Asian Elephants, Alligators, Sambhar Deer, Asian Black Bears, Walking Deer, Hog Deer and Sloth.
