Vendors Asked To Display Nameplate On Carts At Najafgarh Vegetable Market
According to Hindustan Times, street vendors at Najafgarh Vegetable Market in Delhi will now have to display names and numbers on their carts to fend off illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. According to the market association, there are almost 300 street vendors in the market selling produce. With the new rule, all the authorised vendors will have to display the unique ‘the number’ issued by the authorities.
While talking to Hindustan Times, Nazafgarh Vyapar Mandal president Santosh Rajput said that all street vendors in the market had been asked to submit identity documents such as Aadhaar cards for verification and thela number issuance. He further added that the data will be maintained by the market association and copies will also be submitted to the local police and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for security purposes.
The market association plans to complete the verification process by November 20. Any one vendor who does not have a nameplate post the completion of the process will not be allowed to sell fruits and vegetables in the market.
Why Did The Authorities Decide To Implement This Rule?
So, what prompted the market association to take up this step? According to the Hindustan Times report, the association received many complaints from unidentified sellers at the market. The authorities suspect them to be illegal migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar and for security purposes, they decided to take up this step. The market association also said that displaying names and numbers will also make it easy for buyers to report any grievance against a seller.
