Unlike most who start their journey early in life, Urmila Baa demonstrated to the world that age is never a hindrance. Her emergence to fame came later in life, but her spirit was always strong. With a gentle voice, a friendly smile, and boundless warmth, she entered people’s homes not just through food but through soul-stirring moments.

Urmila Baa entered MasterChef India Season 7, at the age of 77, and became one of the contestants among the top 16. Her participation was not only for showcasing her cooking talent but also for breaking stereotypes about age. Although she was the first contestant to be eliminated, she made a permanent mark on the judges and audience through her presence. Chef Vikas Khanna remarked on her inspiring journey, and her mantra, ‘Gir, Uth, Par Ruk Mat’ (Fall, Rise, Don’t Stop), resonated with many.

Besides her culinary ventures, Urmila Baa was also a motivational speaker and a YouTuber, sharing her recipes and life lessons with a broader audience. Her life was highlighted on several platforms, including a TEDx talk, where she stressed that age must never be an inhibitive aspect when chasing one’s dreams. We also had the chance to interview her and learn more about her life journey.

MasterChef contestant Santa Sarmah posted a heartfelt tribute on her Instagram story. The caption of her story was, “I feel blessed to have shared moments with you. May happiness be with you, wherever you roam. Rest in peace, Baa.”

Similar tributes have inundated social media with hashtags ‘#BaaForever’, ‘#GujjuBen’, and ‘#UrmilaBaa’ trending in her memory. Her last rites were held at Chandan Wadi Crematorium in Mumbai on April 8 at 8 AM. Friends, family, and countless admirers came together to say goodbye to the woman who had brought so much joy into their lives.

Although Urmila Baa is no longer with us, her story will continue to echo. Not only in cookbooks or YouTube, but in the hearts of everyone who smiled because of her. She has taught us that it is never too late to begin again, to embrace joy, and to be unafraid of the spotlight.

As we bid farewell, let us take her light with us. Her laughter, strength, and warmth will inspire generations to come.
