Italy’s Via dell’Amore, or “Path of Love,” is set to reopen on July 27, 2024, after an extensive refurbishment that cost over $24 million. This renowned trail spans 900 metres (nearly 3,000 feet). It is nestled between Riomaggiore and Manarola in the Cinque Terre region of Liguria, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its breathtaking coastal views.

The path has been closed since September 2012 due to a landslide that injured four tourists. The reopening comes after a meticulous reconstruction process that began on January 14, 2022. Due to its challenging cliffside location, the refurbishment required innovative engineering solutions. Specialists used helicopters to transport materials, installed stainless steel nets and deep bolts, and employed rock climbers to manoeuvre equipment along the precarious cliffs.
Initially, from July 27 to August 8, 2024, the trail will be open only to local residents of the Cinque Terre, Levanto, La Spezia, and former residents of Riomaggiore, along with their families. Starting August 9, tourists will be able to access the trail. According to CNN, visits must be booked in advance through a website currently under construction. It will cost travellers €10 (approximately ₹910.19). To ensure a pleasant experience, access will be limited to 400 people per hour. It will be divided into groups of 100 every 15 minutes.

The trail’s restoration was officially celebrated by Italian government officials and local authorities. As per the CNN reports, Giacomo Giampedrone, the commissioner for safety work, expressed pride in returning the Via dell’Amore to its former glory. He emphasised that the project was akin to restoring a priceless work of art. It was certainly carried out with respect for the natural environment.
