A viral video making rounds on X (formerly Twitter) shows how an unprecedented surge in pilgrims ended up causing an overwhelming rush at railway stations in Varanasi. According to the Hindustan Times, the video was captured at Varanasi Cantt Railway Station and captured people entering the engine and locking the door from inside.

The video captured around 20 men and women sitting inside the engine and treating it like a regular coach, even occupying the pilot’s seat. This move shows how, despite special Maha Kumbh trains, there is extreme pressure on the city’s transportation system.

People soon alerted the railway officials about passengers entering the train’s loco cabin. The Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) rushed to the scene. They can be seen talking and coercing the people to open the door and coming out of the coach. They were able to successfully remove the passengers from the engine. The authorities also explained that occupying the locomotive posed serious risks, as it contained critical operational controls. They were able to accommodate the stranded passengers in other compartments later.
