Video: Kanlaon Volcano Erupts In Philippines; Ash Rises 4km Into The Sky

The Kanlaon Volcano in the central Philippines erupted early Tuesday morning. The eruption sent a plume of ash 4 kilometres into the sky and prompted calls for local schools to shut down. The area around the volcano on the island of Negros was still under evacuation orders from an eruption in December.

Kanlaon Volcano Erupts In The Philippines

According to CBS News, Kanlaon Volcano, one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines, erupted recently. The explosive eruption started at 5:51 AM (local time) and stopped at 6:47 AM (local time), as per the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

In a statement issued by the institute, they revealed that the volcano produced “a voluminous bent plume approximately 4,000 metres tall.” Thankfully, there were no reports of injuries or damage from the eruption. It did, however, scatter ash in at least four farming villages nearby. Authorities were forced to suspend school in all these villages. Visuals on social media showed a wide, billowing plume of smoke stretching into the sky above the volcano.

As per local authorities, they were anticipating the eruption and were prepared for it as well. They had already evacuated families within the 4-6 kilometres radius of the volcano during the previous eruption last December.

The Kanlaon Volcano is located in the central part of the Philippines. This region is also known as the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Furthermore, this archipelago is lashed by about 20 typhoons and storms a year. This makes it one of the world’s most disaster-prone regions.

Kanlaon Volcano is an active andesitic stratovolcano. It is also the highest mountain on the island of Negros in the Philippines, with an elevation of 2,465 metres above sea level. As per reports, Kanlaon has erupted more than 40 times since 1819. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology continuously monitors the volcanic activities of Kanlaon.
