Video: Navi Mumbai Turns Pink As Thousands Of Flamingoes Flock To The City For Migrations

Thousands of Greater and Lesser flamingoes migrated to Navi Mumbai’s wetlands and turned the city pink! Photos and videos capturing breathtaking visuals of the pink birds flocking to the city are making the rounds on the internet. During this time of the year, thousands of flamingoes travel from Gujarat and other regions to the wetlands of Navi Mumbai and turn the city into a pink paradise.

A viral video shared by Singapore High Commissioner in India Simon Wong (@SGinIndia) captured a vast flamboyance of flamingoes gracefully flying over Navi Mumbai’s wetlands. Shades of pink could be seen reflecting in the water and creating breathtakingly stunning visuals.

According to the Hindustan Times, the flamingoes were heading to Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary. It is a vital ecological hotspot that witnesses this annual migration of the birds, arriving in search of food and a safe habitat. Every winter, thousands of flamingoes travel from various regions to Navi Mumbai. The abundant algae and mudflats available in the wetlands of Navi Mumbai make an ideal feeding ground for the birds. This year, their grand arrival started around New Year.

Restoring Mangrove Forests And Mudflats In The Area

As per the Hindustan Times report, Amazon is all set to invest $1.2 million in mangrove forests and mudflats restoration projects in the area. Reportedly, they are vital for the feeding grounds for Navi Mumbai’s iconic flamingo population. Amazon has partnered with Hasten Regeneration, a social enterprise focused on ecosystem restoration, for this initiative. They will fund clean-up efforts along the Thane Creek’s settlements and even support mangrove plantations in Gujarat.

This investment is part of Amazon’s $100 million ‘Right Now Climate Fund’. This massive fund supports climate resilience, biodiversity, and conservation projects in the communities where the company operates.
