The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has achieved a significant milestone in the development of Mumbai’s first underground Metro Line 3. The crucial trials conducted by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) on the rolling stock – the trains themselves – have been successfully completed. This is a major step forward towards the much-anticipated launch of the Colaba-Bandra-Seepz underground line.

In early June, the RDSO kicked off a series of rigorous tests to assess the performance and safety of the metro’s rolling stock. They pushed the trains to their limits, reaching speeds of up to 95 kilometres per hour. To ensure the trains could handle real-world conditions, they tested both empty and fully loaded carriages.
These trials were not merely about speed. The RDSO meticulously evaluated the trains’ oscillation tendencies, a crucial factor for passenger comfort and safety. The successful completion of these trials signifies that the rolling stock meets the stringent safety and operational standards set by the RDSO, a critical agency under the Ministry of Railways.

They inspected the Aarey Station building, Shunting track area, work of OCC building, Maintenance workshop and PEB works at Aarey car depot. Also inspected the Track work, MEP work, OCS & STPT works.

While celebrating this achievement, the MMRC remains focused on the remaining tasks before launch. Testing of the Metro Line 3’s other electrical systems is currently underway. These tests are vital to ensure the smooth and reliable operation of the entire network. This encompasses traction power supply, signalling systems, and station facilities.
Perhaps the most crucial stage yet to come is the integrated testing of the rolling stock with the signalling system. This complex process will verify seamless communication and coordination between the trains and the trackside signalling equipment. Successful completion of this stage will guarantee safe and efficient train movement across the entire Metro Line 3 corridor.
Once all testing phases are demonstrably successful, the MMRC will invite the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for a final inspection. The CMRS is an independent safety regulator responsible for overseeing all aspects of metro rail operations in India. Their approval is mandatory before Metro Line 3 can officially begin passenger services.
