In the Hindu calendar, Ekadashi marks the eleventh day of both the waxing and waning phases of the moon where devotees offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. Among the many Ekadashis observed throughout the year, Vijaya Ekadashi is considered the most important. People observe fast and pray for happiness, prosperity, and well-being.
Why Is Vijaya Ekadashi Celebrated?
For Hindus, Ekadashi is an auspicious day that usually occurs twice a month during Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. It is a very important day for devotees of Vishnu and many of them observe fast on this day, some even going without water (nirjala) throughout the day. Vijaya Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalguna. The word ‘vijaya’ means victory and it is said that anyone who observes this day-long fast is blessed with success and victory in all phases of life.
According to the Puranas, in ancient times, many kings observed Vijaya Ekadashi fast and won fierce battles. It is believed that even the toughest of battles can be conquered with this fast. Another mythology tale suggests that in Mahabharata, Lord Krishna suggested the Pandavs observe Vijaya Ekadashi to overcome obstacles in the battle and achieve victory.

A day before Ekadashi, place it in your puja area on a mound of grains like wheat, rice, barley, corn, or chickpeas.
